Sales Person of the Year

SONY DSC

It was an extremely tight race in 2014 for the coveted ZippyDogs Sales Person of the Year trophy! Elise Lindborg and Kelli Henderson were neck and neck throughout the year, each taking the lead every other month. On December 30th, Kelli Henderson looked like the clear winner, leading the race by $10,000. But sad news came for Kelli on the last day of the year.

Close up

On December 31st, one of Elise’s customers at the University of Washington placed a last minute order for a years’ worth of swag for their department, crushing Kelli’s lead by five digits!

SPof Y - CourtIt was one of the most amazing sales comebacks in ZippyDogs history and is a win for the record books! “Let it be known! It ain’t over till it’s over” said Elise as she howled out the door for a celebratory drink!

Top Dog to Speak at the Downtown Renaissance Hotel

March 18th, 2015

Don’t miss this! ZippyDogs is very excited that LGBT owned businesses have an opportunity to become LGBT certified and open the door to new business. Come to the first-ever, Greater Seattle Business Associations LGBT certification workshop at 10:00 am on March 18 (no cost to attend) and learn if this certification program is right for your business.

There is only one LGBT Certifying body and it is the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) based in Washington DC.

On March 18, GSBA will welcome NGLCC’s Sam McClure, Vice President Affiliate Relations and Justin Nelson, Co-Founder & President. Sam will lead a free late morning workshop on what it takes to become LGBT certified. Nationally, many corporations now include LGBT in their diverse supplier chain and have a commitment to do business with LGBT Certified businesses. Hear first-hand from other GSBA certified members why they got certified and the benefits they have since received.

Right after the workshop there will be a luncheon ($50). Justin Nelson, President of the NGLCC, will talk about the state of the LGBT Business movement, nationally and globally. Justin’s a great speaker who traveled around the globe meeting with LGBT business owners. Justin has a lot to update us on the state of our movement.

Don’t wait, register today for the LGBT Certification Workshop on March 18 at 10:30am at the Renaissance (no cost to attend) and the GSBA Luncheon, also on March 18 right after the workshop at the Renaissance Hotel. You can email your interest for the workshop to office@thegsba.org and register for the luncheon at the same time; or go online at www.thegsba.org to register for the luncheon and workshop.

Khloe – DOG OF THE MONTH

Khloe is a Poochi – half Toy Poodle half Chihuahua

Here’s what Khloe’s mom has to say about her!

532559_105749116236903_489930754_n

Khloe is a 10 pound ball of fluff and love. You may say that she’s spoiled but I say that she’s loved. She’s a hugger (she’ll actually wrap her front paws around you) and a kisser and she’s guaranteed to brighten the day of anyone she meets! I found Khloe at the Tanque Verde Swap Meet when I was vacationing in Tucson, Arizona and it was love at first sight. I knew Khloe was meant to come home with me and join the family when my boyfriend pointed out that we both had the same hair – color and curls.

English is Khloe’s second language as she was raised in a Spanish speaking home for the first 8 weeks of her life. I had to dig all the way back to my high school Spanish lessons in order to communicate with her first family enough to get her. With some help translating from the surrounding Swap Meet attendees, I was able to muddle through the communication barrier and bring my little 3 pound fur ball home.

Khloe 3

Since I was on vacation, home was first a hotel room but Khloe didn’t mind one bit. She charmed the hotel employees, the airline staff on the return flight and continues to charm everyone she meets. To Khloe, the best treat in the world is a good cuddle which is perfect because she’s such a lover that she givesas many kisses as she gets. As long as she’s with her pack of people she’ll happily go anywhere and do anything. She’s the best and she’s loved to pieces!Khloe-1

Knowing Your Dimensional Weights

One of our suppliers has put together a great explanation of Dimensional Weight and we want to share it with you.

As many of you have already discovered, UPS and Fed Ex recently changed how they bill out freight. They are now shipping by dimensional weight. This may or may not affect how you are used to handling freight quotes. In most cases, this means that freight may be a little pricier for you. To figure freight estimates, you need to take the length, height and width of a box and multiply it altogether and then divide it by 166. That is your dimensional weight and how freight is now billed out. EXCEPTION: If the actual weight of the box is higher than the dimensional weight, then the freight is billed using that weight. The higher number wins, of course!

Let’s look at two examples of our supplier Tranter’s products.

1,000 lids for the 8 oz. foam cup ships in a box 17 x 7 x 12 and physically weighs 4 lbs. Prior to January 2015, you were charged for a 4 lb. box. Now your are charged more than double the weight going by dimensional weight 17 x 7 x 12 = 1428 / 166 = 8.60 rounded up to 9 lbs.

Here’s another example with the actual weight larger than dimensional weight. 2500 of the Lasting Impression Beverage Napkins ship in a box 21 x 16 x 10. This equals a dimensional weight of 21 lbs. The actual weight of this box is 30 lbs. This will ship at 30 lbs. instead of 21 lbs. Remember, the higher number wins.

What can we do to make this easier for you? Well we can’t change the pricing, but when we give you a quote, it will always include a shipping quote so there are no surprises. #WOOF!

Bentley – Dog of the Month

Bentley is the happiest Golden Retriever puppy you’ll meet! He loves to nap, play and gnaw on his peanut butter filled Kong.

From butterflies to wood chips, he’s a food vacuum to say the least. Bentley is also very patient and makes friends everywhere he goes!

His best friend is Bonnie the Yellow Lab who comes to the back door when she wants him to come out and play.

This past June Seattle based Starbucks threw the dogs a little bone and allowed us to fetch a giant rainbow flag to celebrate Pride week in Seattle.

Best of all, the flag was made in the USA! Not only did the flag look good but it made a huge splash in the local news.

Thanks go to Starbucks for supporting ZippyDogs a local woman owned small business.

Top Dog Attends the NGLCC National Conference

Recently Top Dog, Elise Lindborg traveled to Las Vegas to attend the National Gay Lesbian Chamber of Commerce’s Business and Leadership conference.

More than 700 LGBT business owners, corporate decision makers, affiliate chamber leaders, and government partners descended on Las Vegas, at Caesars Palace for an amazing three days of educational sessions, top keynote speakers, world-class networking, and unforgettable special events designed to grow business and develop new connections.

As the current 2013-2014 NGLCC Supplier of the Year ZippyDogs sponsored the conference towels for a grueling 20 minute work out by a fellow gay business owner – Shaun T of Insanity.

Check out how good the towels looked as participants walked into the opening session!
Everyone was thankful for their towels after Shaun T kicked some butts.

Made in USA and ZippyDogs

Great tour of Evans! Elise and Kelli went down to California (I know, any excuse to travel) and took a tour of our supplier’s manufacturing facility! Made in USA plastic – manufacturing, molding and printing. We loved this place – Evans Manufacturing!

Trans and Opaque Beads

This shows raw plastic pellets, for translucent and opaque plastics, before they melt it down and add color.

Chopped Plastic

This picture shows a close up of colored opaque and translucent plastic scrap destined for the recycling bins.

Chopped Plastic Bin

More of same – in the recycle bins. They reuse as much of plastic bits as they can, by mixing them in with another run of the same color plastic.  When the color bits get mixed together like in this picture, they can still reuse it. However, the result is a dark charcoal or black product. The end result is a 100% recycled plastic product.

Plastic Purge

This picture shows plastic that has been blown out of the lines of the injection molding machines. It it has to be done to prepare the machine for the next order.

Plastic Purge Box

The is Elise Lindborg and the factory floor manager showing us how they recycle as much of the plastic as possible. Who knew playing in plastic could be so fun and artistic?

Here are some examples of the finished products created by Evans Manufacturing! USA Made and almost everything contains some recycled plastics. Evans – you rock… I mean, You Plastic!

DOG OF THE MONTH – May 2014

Dogs O’ the Month – Nuka & Sheena

Owner: Jocelyn McRae – Prestige Custom Builders (customer of ZD)

Hooooowwwwlll!  We are Nuka & Sheena, brother & sister Alaskan Malamutes.  We love to talk and howl; we only bark if something is really wrong.  Mom brought us home at 8 weeks old and has had her hands full ever since.  We are now 8 years old and are just figuring out that we are no longer pups.  What do you mean that we are WAY TOO BIG to be lap dogs?  Weighing in at 130 and 141 pounds we almost outweigh both our humans and can’t understand why they don’t want us on the furniture or trying to crawl onto their laps.

IMG_2083   IMG_2172

Sheena (AKA: Princess) is a tan and white female malamute.  She is known to be human shadow who is happiest glued to her human’s side, on a pile of dirty laundry or curled up in the smallest space she can fit herself into.  She is the boss!  She steals Nuka’s toys and doesn’t even play with them, just lies on top of them.  But give her a soccer ball, or basketball and she is a four legged Pele’ until she gets her mouth around it and pops it. She can never get enough attention, petting, tummy rubs or hugs!

Nuka (AKA: Mr. Cool) is black & white and according to his owner is “too cool for school”! But if you don’t say hello to him he’ll give you an earful.  He loves to lounge around outside all day.  Everyone tells him he’s beautiful and it’s starting to go to his head.  When he’s being petted he wants people to hold his paw, as if they are supposed to kiss his ring like he’s a king.  But he doesn’t look very regal when he is laying around upside down; his gums flapping and with his feet straight up in the air!

These beautiful Malamutes go on long walks every day and are adored by their neighborhood fan base.  Rock on!

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH – February 2014

Kelli Sales Person of the Year 2013

Chili Dog has taken back the crown! Fueled by anger and resentment over her crushing defeat in 2012, Chili dominated sales in 2013. By taking the lead early in the year, she cowed the competition and continued her dominance month after month. “She started strong and stayed strong – I just don’t know what happened” mumbled loser Elise Lindborg. When asked to describe the best part of her win, Kelli Henderson barked, “Crushing Elise’s sales by over $70K – WOOF!”

Congrats again to Chili Dog – Salesperson of the Year!

DOG OF THE MONTH – FEBRUARY 2014

JOSIE

IMG_1661

Meet Josie, a beautiful and kind 7-month old Golden Retriever born in Arlington, WA.  At only 4 months of age, she had mastered “sit”, “down” and “high-five”.  But when she learned how to retrieve the morning newspaper, her owner knew she had a genius on her hands!

IMG_1696

IMG_1657

Like most Golden Retrievers, Josie loves the water.  She is quite at home on the family boat and cruising on Lake Washington with the wind in her fur makes her tail wag!  She loves people and her ball with equal enthusiasm.

Her go-to snacks are cheese, meatballs and oranges.  Oranges? Yes!  In fact, she will “spin” for her favorite treats.

ACCEPTANCE SPEECH

Can we get a woof?

Thank you! Thank you so much NGLCC. Three years ago we never imagined we could be the LBGT Supplier of the year! Holy Cow!

Ever since the day we joined the NGLCC only good things have come to ZippyDogs. So many great opportunities have come … and not just great opportunities – but G R E A T opportunities. For example: organized one on one meetings with Fortune 500 supplier diversity reps, fantastic business conferences with amazing key note speakers, a chance to learn from top business minds at the Tuck School of Business, this National Dinner, mentors, networking opportunities, today’s SBA Federal Procurement Forum, killer after parties (of course) and more!

Prior to joining the NGLCC our business hit a plateau and for two years we struggled to increase our sales. After attending our first NGLCC business conference in 2011 we found that the quality of the business building information was solid. We did not get nuggets of solid business advice – but bagful’s. Every learning opportunity presented was solid and vetted. Being in business over 14 years we have gone to lots of conferences, seminars, hired consultants, joined networking groups and I can tell you there is a lot of business fluff out there. If you truly take advantage of the opportunities the NGLCC presents your business will grow. Our sales have increased 25% or more every year we have been affiliated with the NGLCC and this year we are having our best year ever.

We are so excited to what 2014 will bring!

Thank you to our family – and by family we mean you! Everyone in this audience. Our fellow certified LGBT business owners and allies who have taken the time to share business stories and strategies.

Thank you to the NGLCC corporate suppliers who support supplier diversity by including LGBT businesses. Your support means more than you will ever know and it is truly appreciated.

In fact Kelli and I have a goal and that is to have some Pacific Northwest companies like Boeing, Microsoft and Starbucks join the NGLCC as corporate sponsors by the end of 2014.

We can’t tell you how great it feels to attend the NGLCC business conference and totally be ourselves – nothing to hide. It’s so refreshing and allows us to bring our authentic selves to the business table.

And finally, I want to thank George Pieper of OutSmart Office Solutions.

It was George who approached this skeptical Top Dog to become a certified LGBT business three years ago. It has been one of the best business decisions we have ever made! Thank you George! Thank you NGLCC. Thank you to you – our family!

ZippyDogs – Your Brand Companion. We put the wag in swag!
